As the Audience Engagement Specialist for the Deseret News, you'll help shape and execute our content marketing and social media strategy. You'll spend your time obsessing about how to better serve our most engaged readers and followers, and how to find more people who will be well served by our reporting and other services.

This position reports to the head digital officer and works closely with Deseret News employees across a variety of areas, including editorial, marketing, design, product and software engineering, etc.


  • This position will challenge you to focus on all aspects of our audience, including measurement, growth, segmentation, engagement, retention and valuation
  • Use data to understand audience behavior and recommend new opportunities and initiatives based on your analysis
  • Manage the daily promotion of Deseret News content on social channels
  • Build up channels for intentional, dedicated audiences who are united by a common passion or cause
  • Develop and follow rubrics for when and how to best promote breaking news, feature stories, opinion content, photography and videos
  • Measure reach and engagement and the effectiveness of overall strategy and individual tactics
  • Harness existing tools to both listen to and interact with our audience
  • Train and offer encouragement to Deseret News staff to help them reach and grow their social following
  • Teach writers and editors to create promotion/outreach plans alongside their story pitches
  • Stay abreast of best practices and emerging changes that will necessitate strategic changes
  • Set ambitious goals and track your success at continuing to grow followers and facilitate increasing levels of engagement
  • Oversee our on-site comments and the remarkable people who moderate them

You're a good fit if you:

  • Have excellent news judgment and understand journalism ethics
  • Are connected deeply to the Beehive State
  • Have a strong personal presence on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.)
  • Can demonstrate with specific examples your capacity to write strong social media copy that gets results
  • Have an established habit of daily news consumption from multiple news sources
  • Thrive working in a dynamic, fast-paced journalistic environment
  • Understand best practices and emerging trends in social media marketing
  • Have the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Are willing to learn, grow and invest in yourself
  • Have at least 4 years of journalism and/or social media marketing experience
  • Have a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or marketing and/or relevant work experience

You're an even better fit if you:

  • Love data and can offer clear recommendations based on your own analysis
  • Find yourself scrutinizing what it is about specific social media posts that catches your attention and makes you click
  • Know what a Facebook Instant article is and when and why a publisher might want to use one
  • Are familiar with Google Analytics, Chartbeat, CrowdTangle and other analytics and social media measurement tools
  • Have solid experience designing and editing in various Adobe Creative Cloud applications
  • Are passionate about our mission

Hours & Pay

This is a full-time, on-site position with great benefits. Salary commensurate with experience.
