  • Produce writing that is thoughtful, informative, rigorous, enlightening, engaging and entertaining

  • Can identify storylines and narratives as you sift through documents, data and multiple in-depth interviews

  • Have a "digital-first" mindset and a creative, innovative capacity to envision ways to tell stories through video, interactive graphics, and other media

  • Know how to establish a strong social media presence and following

  • Are willing to take regular feedback and editing from multiple editors

  • Can work on deadline and balance multiple projects at one time, some short-term and some long-term

We want someone who:

  • Instinctively knows how to find interesting stories based on current events and issues

  • Is an analytical, critical thinker who can see big pictures as well as small details and weave them seamlessly together

  • Is a curious and tenacious reporter who will ask tough questions and not give up until answers surface and the story lands

  • Is a self-starter who requires minimal supervision and is motivated by a love of the story

  • Understands the Deseret News' mission to be a trusted voice of light and truth for a growing local and national audience.

Things you'll get to do:

  • Produce long-term in-depth and investigative stories with a focus on moving the needle

  • Rigorous reporting on solutions to social problems in the vein of the Solutions Journalism Network: https://www.solutionsjournalism.org/

  • In addition to long-term projects, write news features and analysis on a regular basis, as well as help with breaking news from time to time

  • Collaborate with a creative team of photographers, graphic designers, web producers and other writers and editors to tailor content to multiple platforms, from web to print to TV

  • Represent the Deseret News in public forums talking about the issues you're reporting on
